On October 1, 2025, the federal government entered a shutdown. Please read below for more information on what this means for our 93-county service area, and how you can receive the support you need in the coming days and weeks.

We have been here before, and we will continue to be here for Heartland neighbors to ensure that everyone receives consistent access to healthy food, especially during this critical time.

How Does a Prolonged Shutdown Affect our Communities?

Amid the highest food insecurity rates our country has seen in nearly a decade, this shutdown will create uncertainty for millions of families. A prolonged shutdown will lead to federal workers and active-duty military members not receiving their expected paychecks—jeopardizing their ability to afford food and cover other household expenses. This includes more than 35,000 federal employees across Nebraska and Iowa. If you have been furloughed, you may be eligible for SNAP. Contact our SNAP Outreach Team today with questions or support on completing an application.

The shutdown could also disrupt vital federal nutrition programs, like SNAP and WIC (Program for Women, Infants, and Children). These critical programs help millions of people put food on the table every month. We will keep you updated on the latest information regarding any changes to benefit assistance.

How Does the Shutdown Affect the Food Bank and its Network Partners?

During a prolonged shutdown, the demand for food assistance is likely to increase. At the same time, Food Bank for the Heartland is already serving four times the number of households it did in 2018. Additional barriers—such as this shutdown—will only exacerbate food insecurity levels and add more pressure to food banks and pantry partners, already struggling to keep up with the growing demand. This shutdown is also compounded by the recent reduction of federal support and a significant decrease in food availability from the USDA.
