Government Shutdown: Get or Give Help

As the government shutdown continues, hundreds of thousands of individuals across Nebraska and western Iowa will not receive their SNAP benefits in November. In response, Food Bank for the Heartland is preparing for an unprecedented surge in the need for food assistance. We are doing everything we can to ensure our neighbors receive consistent access to healthy food, during the shutdown and beyond. If you or someone you know is in need of food, please click the button below for food resources in your area.

WAYS TO HELP

We cannot fulfill our mission without your generosity, and we are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support. When everyone works together to help alleviate hunger—we can create sustained change across our communities.  Whether you’re hoping to donate funds, donate food, or volunteer, please read on to see how you can help. Thank you for joining us in the fight against hunger. Your support is providing a critical lifeline for thousands of Heartland neighbors!

DONATE FUNDS

The most effective way to make a meaningful impact is through a financial donation.
96 cents of every dollar goes directly back into our communities. Thanks to our relationships with retailers, we’re able to purchase food in bulk, allowing your donation to stretch even further. If you’re interested in becoming a Monthly Meal Maker, click the button below to make a recurring gift.

DONATE FOOD

Donated food helps provide nourishing meals for our neighbors. Whether you want to organize a food drive in your community, at your school, or at your office, every donation makes a difference. Please see below for more information on which food items the food bank needs most. We strongly encourage ONLY non-perishable donations. Thank you!

Most-Needed Food Items

Food donations are accepted Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at our office and warehouse at 10525 J Street in Omaha.

When delivering your food donation, follow the signs to Dock Door 6 and call 402-331-1213 upon arrival. A Food Bank team member will open the door and assist with your donation. Thank you!

Volunteer

Volunteers are the heart of our organization. When we see an increased need and receive an influx of donations from our community, gifts of time and talent are even more imperative. Whether you’re on your own, with your family, or a small group of friends, volunteering is a great way to make an impact in a short amount of time.

advocate

Active-duty military members, public servants and government contractors are doing everything they can to care for their loved ones and make ends meet. In addition, more than 400,000 Nebraskans and Iowans will lose their SNAP benefits in November. Now is the time to come together and use our voices collectively to ensure every family has the stability and support they need to get back on their feet.

We urge you to contact your elected officials to reopen the government and maintain the nutrition programs that help families weather tough times and strengthen our communities. Let’s make sure that every family can provide for themselves and their loved ones.
